AI Twins, Ghosting Subs, and Live Stream Level-Ups |
|
|
G'day Reader,
Hey Creators!
Keeping up with YouTube is practically a full-time job lately. Between robots that look just like you and the platform "ghosting" your inactive subscribers, there is a lot to unpack. Let’s dive into this past few weeks of chaos so you can stay ahead of the curve.
Let's get into it 👇

👯 Meet Your Digital Twin: AI Avatars & Deepfake Armor
YouTube is leaning hard into artificial intelligence, offering two major updates for your digital likeness. First, the new AI Avatars feature allows you to create a digital version of yourself that looks and sounds just like you. By recording a "live selfie," you can train the AI to generate original Shorts or appear in "Remixed" videos using only text prompts—meaning you can "appear" in videos without ever picking up a camera. I highly recommend Kevin Koble's coverage on this feature - it just happens to be this week's recommended video.
To balance this, YouTube is expanding its AI Likeness Detection tool. This technology proactively scans incoming posts for visual face matches to detect and help remove unauthorized AI-generated deepfakes of your likeness.
- Technical Limits: Individual AI Avatar clips are currently limited to eight seconds, though you can stitch multiple clips together.
- Who Can Use It: This is rolling out globally to creators 18+ (excluding Europe for now) who are part of the YouTube Partner Program.
- In addition to creators, YouTube have already given access to media, politicians, and now celebrities.
Doug's Take: In recent week's we've seen several ways that these features (and other AI based tools on YouTube) are fundamentally "at odds" with each other. It seems to be a case of the classic, "the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing" scenario. 🔕 The "Bell" is Getting Picky: Notification Updates
Is your "Bell" notification data looking a little slim? YouTube has officially changed how push notifications work for subscribers who have selected "All Notifications". To prevent "notification overload" and keep users from turning off all alerts entirely, the platform will now stop sending mobile push alerts to inactive subscribers—those who haven’t watched your channel in about a month and have ignored recent alerts.
These inactive fans will still see your updates in their in-app YouTube Inbox (the bell icon), and push notifications will automatically resume if they watch any of your content again.
- The Creator Impact: You might see a drop in "Bell notifications sent" in your Studio data, but YouTube insists this shouldn't negatively impact views from your truly active audience.
Doug's Take: knowing how little of a video's views actually comes from notifications, is likely to not have any real negative effect on your video's numbers. Take a look at your YouTube Studio and the Bell Notifications Sent card under Reach in Analytics - you'll see that people just don't typically click on the notification when it it shown. This update is designed so that less viewers turn off notifications because their systems are spamming unwanted alerts.

📺 Live Streaming Just Got More Interactive (and Profitable)
Streaming is seeing a massive overhaul to help you connect with fans and protect the "vibe." Gifts have officially expanded to horizontal live streams and Premieres on mobile, replacing Super Stickers for opted-in creators. Fans can also now compete on the Top Fans Leaderboard, earning Experience Points (XP) for messages, Super Chats, and now watch time.
YouTube is also making ads less intrusive during high-stakes moments. The system can now detect peak live chat engagement and will automatically hold back ads for all viewers to protect the momentum of the stream. Plus, when a fan buys a Super or Gift, they get a personal ad-free window so their support isn't immediately interrupted by a commercial.

Product & Revenue Bits
- Nano Banana Integration: Google’s AI image model is now inside the YouTube Create app, letting you generate custom assets with text prompts and reference images.
- Shopping Streamline: The "Product Shelf" is being removed on May 15 to declutter the watch page; YouTube recommends that creators switch to tagging products directly in content.
- Premium Lite Expansion: The lower-priced "Premium Lite" tier has expanded to 15 new countries, including Vietnam, Belgium, and Peru.
- Shorts Image Posts: A new experiment allows creators to post carousels of up to 10 images directly in the Shorts feed.
- RIP Clips: The 60-second Clips feature is being retired in favor of a new mobile "Share at Timestamp" tool.
Bugs & Audience Data
- The 90-Second Ad Mystery: YouTube officially denies testing 90-second unskippable ads, despite widespread user reports on TV apps.
- The Skipping Glitch: A new bug is causing some videos to jump forward tens of seconds after a viewer is done with a pre-roll ad.
- Deeper Media Kits: Creators in the Partner Program can now see audience "Family Status" and "Household Income" data to help pitch for brand deals.
- Voice Boost: A new setting for desktop and TV helps make dialogue clearer by amplifying vocals and cutting background noise.
- Mobile Scrolling Bug: TeamYouTube is investigating a known issue where some users are unable to scroll within the mobile app.
