G'day Reader,
Welcome back to your monthly breakdown of everything changing on YouTube. Over the month of July, YouTube dropped some of the most requested features of the year—from long-awaited creative controls to powerful channel organization tools, plus critical updates to monetization guidelines.
Whether you're producing quick-hit vertical clips, building episodic series, or growing a loyal subscriber base, here is what you need to know to stay ahead of the algorithm and maximize your channel's potential.

Custom Thumbnails for YouTube Shorts Are Finally Here!
Shorts creators, rejoice! YouTube has officially rolled out the ability for YouTube Partner Program (YPP) creators to upload fully custom vertical thumbnails (up to 4K resolution at 2160 x 3840) via YouTube Studio on desktop.
- The Impact for Creators: Previously, desktop uploads automatically generated random frames, forcing creators to rely on the YouTube or Studio apps just to pick a decent thumbnail from a frame. Now, you can upload tailored 9:16 artwork directly from your computer.
- Safe Framing Guidelines: While the frame ratio is 9:16, keep your critical text and visuals centered within the 2:3 safe zone. Important channel UI overlays and screen edges can obscure graphics on mobile feeds and channel pages. See my free "safe zone" template later in the newsletter.

Turn Your Playlists Into Official YouTube "Shows"
YouTube is giving episodic series and multi-part content a major upgrade with Shows. YPP creators can now convert existing playlists or create new ones as official "Shows" complete with seasons, structured episode numbers, and dedicated show pages.
- How This Helps Your Growth: Shows get elevated visual treatments on TV screens and mobile layouts. More importantly, videos in a Show become eligible for special discovery surfaces like "Recommended Shows" and "Continue Watching" shelves on TV homepages.
- How to Set It Up: Head to YouTube Studio > Content > Playlists, hover over your episodic playlist, click the three-dot menu, and select "Add show features." From there, you can organize seasons, episode order, and add custom show artwork. Check out my video on Shows here:

YouTube Clarifies Rules on "Low-Effort" & Inauthentic Content Monetization
YouTube has updated and clarified its YouTube Partner Program (YPP) monetization guidelines to target generic, repetitive, and off-putting content. While YouTube emphasizes that AI tools themselves aren't banned, content that lacks human value or relies purely on automated templates will face demonetization.
-
3 Key Buckets Being Targeted:
- Generic or Repetitive Content: Mass-produced videos or templates where uploads feel virtually interchangeable from one another.
- Unsatisfying or Off-Putting Content: Staged shock content, manipulative formulas (e.g., fake animal rescue clips), or videos without a meaningful narrative arc.
- Unverified AI "Experts" on Sensitive Topics: AI-generated personas posing as human professionals giving health, legal, or financial advice.
- The Bottom Line: Focus on adding original commentary, human perspective, distinct storylines, and unique research to keep your monetized status safe.

Optimize Your Shorts Thumbnails with Safe Framing
Don't settle for a random blurry frame on your vertical videos! When designing your custom 9:16 Shorts graphic in 2160x3840 resolution, keep all primary focal points—such as facial expressions, key objects, and large text overlays—inside the centered 2x3 safe area. This ensures your thumbnail looks clean and readable across desktop, TV, and mobile feeds without UI buttons or edges cutting off your text.
📁 Free Downloadable Template: We've created a free vertical thumbnail template (PNG/PSD overlay) with marked safe zones so you can test your designs before publishing! Download the Free Template Here.
